Icing on the cake.

I sat down to watch Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall’s ‘Christmas Fayre’ last night and much as I tried to relax and just enjoy the programme I couldn’t help but grab my pen and scribble down his Chutney recipe.
(500g onions, 1kg apples, 500ml cider vinegar, 400g demerera sugar to which he added figs, cranberries, zest and juice of orange and glug of port then in went a muslin spice bag encompassing 6 cloves, cardamom pods, coriander and ginger and the chutney was finished off with some crushed walnuts for texture)
This chutney looked like Christmas in a jar.

Next up was ‘Jamie’s Best Ever Chrismas’.  I felt a little bit cheated at first when I realised it was a hodge podge of older programmes glued together.  I’d seen all of them before but that didn’t stop me reaching for my pen to jot down Jamie’s ‘make ahead gravy’ recipe.  Another recipe that I particularly liked was his mulled wine which I hope to try out this week.
I have a real Christmas buzz on and as you can see below I’ve iced the cake with some chocolate stars so that the kids might actually try some this year.  In the meantime I’ve lots of shopping still to do and with the kids off school today that will prove a little bit tricky!  (Please be open tomorrow…)
